Speakers’ biographies

Kerstin Bergendal is a visual artist based in Sweden and Denmark working at the intersection between critical art practice, participatory urbanism and dialogue-based listening practices. Since the early 1990s, she has performed temporary, often large-scale and durational, interventions in public or semi-public spaces, with a specific focus on a transitory role of the artist in the public sphere. She is Senior Lecturer at Valand Academy in Göteborg.

Nathan Coley is a British artist living and working in Glasgow, Scotland. He was commissioned by Lund Cathedral to realise the first Råängen commission in 2018. Recent solo exhibitions include those at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (2017); Parafin, London (2017); Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany (2013); Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2012). He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2007. His work is included in the current Kochi-Muziris Biennale in India. He is represented by Parafin Gallery in London.

Eleanor Pinfield joined Art on the Underground in London as Director in 2014. The programme of temporary and permanent commissions as well as wide-ranging engagement programmes has gained an international reputation for quality, rigour and ambition. Since 2014, Eleanor has commissioned work from leading international artists including Heather Phillipson, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Geta Bratescu, and Linder. Eleanor previously worked at Tate Modern, where she led the curatorial management of The Tanks ‘Art in Action’ programme. Eleanor is a member of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, sits on the Crossrail Art Programme Advisory Group and the Pitzhangar Gallery Exhibitions Committee.

Emma Ribbing is an artist and choreographer based in Malmö. She has worked for twenty years in the performing arts, living and carrying out projects in London, Switzerland and Malmö. Her studies in photography and video have influenced her choreographic approach. Emma runs the media studio in-discourse in Malmö as well as working at the Creative Learning Centre, for the city of Malmö.

Apolonija Šušteršič is an architect, artist and professor and a founder of an MFA study program Art & Public Space at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. She holds a PhD in Visual and Performing Arts from University of Lund, Malmö Art Academy, Sweden. She runs her own art/architecture studio practice in Oslo, Norway and in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her practice is research based, related to a critical analysis of space; usually focused on the processes and relationships between institutions, cultural politics, urban planning and architecture.

Jes Fernie is an independent curator and writer based in the UK. She works with galleries, architectural practices and public realm organisations on commissioning programmes, exhibitions, and residency projects. Working primarily beyond gallery walls, she is interested in an expansive idea of contemporary artistic practice, which encompasses dialogue, research, engagement and serendipity. She has worked with a broad range of organisations including Tate, Serpentine Gallery, Flat Time House, RIBA, ACE London, St Paul’s Cathedral, Lund Cathedral, TAAK, Delfina Foundation and the RCA. She was invited by Lund Cathedral to develop Råängen with White Arkitekter in 2017.

Lena Sjöstrand is Chaplain at Lund Cathedral and Co-Director of Råängen with Mats Persson. She was ordained in 1984. She has a special interest in the dialogue between art, theology and the church and has contributed texts to various publications in this field. The Cathedral has an ongoing programme of exhibitions by contemporary artists, which Lena has been responsible for since 1996. Her PhD thesis in theology, from Copenhagen University, focused on performativity and the body in liturgy and theatre.
